Fourth Quarter Grants Awarded
By The Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut

The Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut has announced fourth-quarter grants to a variety of charitable organizations in Litchfield County. Including grants from unrestricted funds, donor-advised and designated funds, distributions on two multi-year grants, and annual holiday donations to the needy, the total grants made for the quarter were $193,307.

Grants from unrestricted funds – $44,457

Young Audiences of Connecticut – $2,500 – to support an artist showcase at the Vogel-Wetmore Elementary School in Torrington. Carlton and Jenny Fyler Fund.

Mental Health Association of Connecticut – $1,000 – to purchase holiday gifts for clients and their children. Edwin and Edith Stone Fund.

Global Harmony Institute – $2,500 – to support a Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday commemoration event and nonviolence training. Carlton and Jenny Fyler Fund.

United Way of Northwest CT – $20,000 challenge grant – to support a collaborative behavioral health proposal involving four area organizations. Marion Wm. and Alice Edwards Fund.

Mountainside Foundation – $3,000 – to support a substance abuse prevention program in three northwest Connecticut schools. Carlton and Jenny Fyler Fund.

Visiting Nurse Association of Litchfield – $2,000 – to fund one-on-one sessions for at-risk children in the Litchfield school system. Keroden Endowed Fund.

Northwest CT YMCA and Artwell Gallery – $2,000 – to fund a collaborative partnership to support arts education and exhibition. Carlton and Jenny Fyler Fund.

Lee H. Kellogg School – $1,000 – to help fund a collaborative workshop on bridge-building and design. Carlton and Jenny Fyler Fund.

Norfolk Historical Society – $2,000 – to help fund a publication about the Battell buildings in Norfolk. Feliciano and Lydia Turri Zaccheo Fund, Keroden Endowed Fund.

Harwinton Westside Volunteer Fire Department – $1,375 – to purchase a set of firefighting gear. Carlton and Jenny Fyler Fund.

Friends of Main Street (Winsted) – $350 – for a workshop on new signs for downtown businesses. Carlton and Jenny Fyler Fund.

Christian Counseling Connection – $3,632 – for an upgraded telephone system. Marion Wm. and Alice Edwards Fund.

Wellspring Foundation – $1,100 – to help fund a parenting program. Carlton and Jenny Fyler Fund.

Susan B. Anthony Project – $2,000 – toward the purchase of a furniture delivery truck for the Polly’s Dream thrift shop. Carlton and Jenny Fyler Fund.

Grants from donor-advised and designated funds – $68,850

From the Weigold Family Fund – Shriners Hospital for Children Orthopedics Department – $350.00 – to be used for the treatment and cure of children with clubfoot and related deformities. In honor of Alden James Weigold.

From the Mary Coutant Fund – Winchester Youth Service Bureau – $450.00 – for the Summer Fun Club, a program for at-risk youth from area towns.

From the Jeffrey and Susan Lalonde Community Betterment Fund – Goshen Volunteer Fire Co., Inc. – $500.00 – for the purchase of equipment.

From the Barbara Oneglia Alvarez Tycienski (B.O.A.T.) Fund – LARC – $1,500.00 – for cooking sessions at Camp LARC.

From the Local Area Fund – Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research – $50,000 – for addition to endowment; Norfolk Library – $5,000 – for addition to endowment; Norfolk Lions Club – $5,000 – to support the volunteer ambulance service; Norfolk Historical Society – $500 – for capital improvements; Connecticut Forest & Park Association – $500 – to support general operations; Northwest Conservation District – $500 – to support general operations; Foothills Visiting Nurse & Home Care – $500 – to support general operations; Winsted Health Center Foundation – $500 – to support general operations.

From the Keroden Designated Fund – $3,550 – Charlotte Hungerford Hospital – for a women’s health event in 2006.

In addition, distributions totaling $60,000 were made on two multi-year grants:

The Warner Theatre – $50,000 – the final distribution of a five-year $250,000 grant for restoration and renovation.

Susan B. Anthony Project – $10,000 – the first distribution of a five-year $50,000 grant for a new building project.

Holiday grants – a total of $20,000 for organizations that assist the needy:
