The Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut has announced its third-quarter grants to various charitable organizations throughout Litchfield County. The Foundation awards grants every quarter.

The third-quarter grants are as follows:

Torrington Civic Symphony – $4,000 – to support board development and program planning. (from the Marion Wm. and Alice Edwards Fund)

Beardsley & Memorial Library – $5,000 – for sidewalk repairs that will prevent further damage to the library’s basement storage area. In memory of Brian O’Neil. (Marion Wm. and Alice Edwards Fund)

Oliver Wolcott Library – $1,150 – to repair and reseal the library’s two chimneys. (Marion Wm. and Alice Edwards Fund)

Rebuilding Together Litchfield County – $5,000 – for house repairs for needy home-owners (materials and labor). (Marion Wm. and Alice Edwards Fund)

Falls Village-Canaan Historical Society – $866 – to purchase archival supplies. (from the John Brooks Fund)

Torrington Historical Society – $3,680 – for DSL wiring, digital equipment and a consultant. (from the Eva M. Coty Fund)

Wall of America Foundation – $15,000 challenge grant – toward a capital campaign for a huge mural to be built in Winsted. (from the Carlton and Jenny Fyler Fund)

Foundation for Norfolk Living – $2,500 – to help fund an affordable housing project. (Margaret C. Tupper Fund)

Northwest Conservation District – $2,500 – to purchase a sound system and projector screen for presentations. (Marion Wm. and Alice Edwards Fund)

Litchfield Montessori School – $2,000 – to support a teacher training program on nonviolence. (Carlton and Jenny Fyler Fund)

Northwestern Connecticut AIDS Project – $1,840 – for a nutritional support program. (Marion Wm. and Alice Edwards Fund)

Charlotte Hungerford Hospital – $5,000 – to purchase LCD televisions for the emergency department waiting area. (Eva M. Coty Fund)

Harwinton Agricultural Society – $5,000 – to install a security system at the Harwinton fairgrounds. (Marion Wm. and Alice Edwards Fund)

Connecticut Junior Republic – $2,500 – to fund a computer resource laboratory. (Carlton and Jenny Fyler Fund)

Morris Housing Authority – $2,550 – to purchase front-loading washing machines, Internet service, newspaper delivery, and a bulletin board. (Marion Wm. and Alice Edwards Fund)

From the Women’s and Girls’ Fund:

The Gilbert School: $900.00 for a teen leadership program for freshman girls Women’s Support Services: $700.00 for their “Calling All Cars” program, which provides cars to needy women Canaan Childcare Center: $700.00 for a new playscape.

From the Cornwall Foundation Fund – $500 – to support the Cornwall Child Center

From the Dr. John S. Glenn Fund for Nurses – $1,400 – to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital for a chemotherapy program and accommodations for a trauma conference for nurses.

The Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut serves northwestern Connecticut with a collection of nearly 120 funds from local donors. These funds support local nonprofit organizations and provide scholarships to area students in twenty towns covering all of the Northwest Corner. In addition to Torrington, the towns are: Barkhamsted, Bethlehem, Colebrook, Cornwall, Canaan (Falls Village), Goshen, Hartland, Harwinton, Kent, Litchfield, New Hartford, Morris, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury, Sharon, Warren, Washington and Winsted.

The Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut was founded in 1969. Its total endowment has grown over those thirty-seven years from an initial funding of $15,000 to assets of more than $12.3-million. Last year the Foundation gave out nearly $600,000 in grants and scholarships.
